Winter didn’t last too long this year for us here in Central Florida. And with the early spring-like temps we’ve been feeling, you might get the urge to spend more time outside. On a whim, you might even decide to head out on a day trip to, say, the rural town of Apopka. This weekend you could land at the Old Florida Outdoor Festival, a sprawling three-day, open-air event that has something for everyone: Outdoorsmen and women tout their fishing and hunting skills in “Lady Angling” and “Gator Hunting” seminars and in the Ducks Unlimited State Duck Calling Contest; grill masters fire it up on Saturday in the Florida BBQ Association cook-off (with $20,000 up for grabs); pups dash and dive in the Dock Dogs competition; Florida Highwaymen art will be on display; rugrats play on rock walls and bounce houses; and Sunday sees another food war with the chili cook-off. We understand the daytime activities might overwhelm, so for a more calm-and-cool evening experience, grab a brew from the beer tent, bites from a host of area food trucks and then take a seat on the grass for live concerts by country band Lonestar (Friday night) and singer-songwriter Gary Allan (Saturday night). – Aimee Vitek
