We Say...

It can be tough to get into the holiday spirit in Orlando – too much sun, not enough mittens – which is why twinkly holiday lights and aromatic pine boughs are so important. Taking a nighttime tour of other people’s over-the-top decorating displays is a good way to kickstart that Chrismukkah feeling – and if you come away with some pretty pictures for your Facebook page or Instagram feed, so much the better. Photographer Barry Kirsch, best known for his black-and-white Murder City series (as seen at Snap! Orlando 2011), leads his fourth annual holiday photo walk Saturday night, but it’s more than just a snap-and-stroll: Kirsch dispenses hard-won tips and tricks for nighttime shooting, and sits down with participants after the walk to review images and make suggestions. “We walk all over Park Avenue and the side streets, the ice skating rink, etc., shooting the lights on the streets as well as those of the store displays,” says Kirsch. Last year he guided 129 shooters. Maybe this year, the weather will cooperate enough to give you chilly fingers, but skip those mittens – they make it hard to use a camera. – Jessica Bryce Young
