We Say...

Since 1979, this event has been a staple of the Christmas season in our area: The Morse Museum installs a selection of its lighted Tiffany stained-glass windows in downtown Winter Park’s Central Park, so the public can enjoy them. Though you can simply enjoy them for what they are – pretty pieces of classic American art – these windows also have a story behind them. They were originally created in 1908 for the Association for the Relief of Respectable Aged Indigent Females, a charity that provided shelter for elderly poor women. In 1974, the organization’s shelter was threatened with demolition, and the board wanted to save the windows, each of which was made to honor a prominent woman who helped support the organization. Winter Park’s Hugh and Jeannette McKean, Tiffany collectors who founded the Morse Museum, purchased the windows and five years later decided to put them out on display for the public at Christmastime. If you struggle to find a bit of Christmas warmth in your soul, a trip to see the windows all lit up while the Bach Festival Choir puts on a live concert should fix what ails you. If you’re lacking in Christmas traditions, it’s never to late to make this one of yours. – Erin Sullivan
