We Say...

Were you to read all of the press materials about this show that we did, you might suspect multi-cultural/multinational music project OneBeat of being boring, tasteful – government-approved, shudder. Please banish these thoughts from your mind. Yes, the program is funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. But it’s informed and produced by Found Sound Nation, the “social engagement wing” of avant-music weirdos (we mean that in the best way) Bang on a Can, which gives OneBeat serious new-music cred. After a two-week residency at Atlantic Center for the Arts with A Tribe Called Quest DJ Ali Shaheed Mohammed, revered and totally kick-ass composer Pauline Oliveros, Bang on a Can guitarist/Paul Simon collaborator Mark Stewart, and experimental trumpeter (and John Zorn cohort) Dave Douglas, these 32 musicians from 21 different countries will make their way up the East Coast, playing shows in bars, churches, music halls, parks and schools. From a Cambodian MC to a Nigerian bassist to a Chinese laptop musician to an Egyptian drummer, a Lebanese oud player, a Danish singer-songwriter … all we can safely predict is an overwhelming experience. And it’s all kicking off from Orlando. Some things sound too good to be true; some things are just good and true. – Jessica Bryce Young
