We Say...

O Fortuna! You’ve heard it a squintillion times. It’s the melodramatic movement from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana that’s been used to score movies and video games, introduce athletes at sporting events and sell everything from Gatorade to Old Spice to tuna. (OK, that last one isn’t true, but it should be.) It’s become auditory shorthand for Hey, This Is a Really Big Deal, OK? – and that’s appropriate, because this Orlando Ballet production of Carmina Burana? It’s a really big deal. Two of Orlando’s most esteemed classical performing arts organizations – Orlando Ballet and the Bach Festival Society – join forces to present a ballet choreographed to Orff’s massively popular cantata, based on a series of medieval poems about the wheel of fortune (not the TV show, but the fickle ups and downs of life). Orlando Ballet artistic director Robert Hill choreographed the piece for 30 dancers, who will share the stage with the Bach Festival Society’s 55-member orchestra and 150-voice choir – please try not to make that 151 by humming along, although it will be almost impossible not to. – Jessica Bryce Young
