We Say...

More than two years after the earthquake that shattered Haiti, the U.S. says, according to an NPR interview marking the tragedy’s anniversary in January, Port-au-Prince and other devastated communities in the region are actually bouncing back! Clean water? Widely available health services? A growing GDP? Check, check and check. Even the cholera’s starting to clear up! But let’s not all Bush it out just yet. (Remember those people in New Orleans that Dubya allegedly didn’t care about and how his mom said the evacuees were better off? Ha! They were so terrible.) A quarter of a million people still died, and as soon as NPR took calls from Haitians, our country’s rosy outlook was quickly (pardon the expression) shaken to its core. We have equally cautious enthusiasm about the 3-D giant-screen presentation Rescue, which highlights the massive global relief efforts that have gone into revitalizing Haiti. Sponsored by Boeing and made by the Canadian military, it’s the kind of all-access fleet porn one only gets when recruitment’s at stake, like this year’s U.S. entry into the propaganda genre, Act of Valor. So get out of the heat, feel good about the world, and think about all the cool things you could be doing just by serving your country. Or Canada. – Justin Strout
