We Say...

When most people think of Winter Park, they generally think of one of three things: spendy shopping on Park Avenue, the higher-ed experience at Rollins College or the Tiffany exhibits at the Morse Museum of American Art. A significant part of Winter Park’s past, present and future – the often-marginalized African-American community of West Winter Park – hardly registers in many people’s brains. In honor of the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the city of Winter Park, the Sage Project of Crealdé School of Art is partnering with the Hannibal Square Heritage Center to highlight that part of the city’s history. West Winter Park is one of the oldest African-American communities in the nation, and the Sage Project has collected oral histories, videos and photos from some of the community’s oldest residents – aged 85 to 106 – who tell stories about life in the less-well-known part of town. An opening reception honoring the elders of the community starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, and a Saturday morning panel discussion about the history of Hannibal Square will take place at the nearby Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. All of our lives, people tell us we should listen to our elders – this exhibit and the accompanying celebrations should make that an engaging and attainable prospect. – Erin Sullivan
