Back in the early ’80s, Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart were both pop stars. This may sound like the most obvious statement in the world (and one that also ignores the fact that they were both pop stars in the ’70s as well), but think about it for a second: How many pop stars today – on the radio or YouTube or whatever – are in their mid- to late-30s? Like, none, right? But back then – the era of MTV, mind you – it seemed like all the pop stars were grown-ups, and 35-year-old Nicks released hits like “Stand Back” while Stewart had a huge hit at 43 with (irony!) “Forever Young.” Of course, the flipside of this is that those grown-up pop stars from 30 years ago are now really, really old. And really, really old artists tend to do one of two things: Cling to the style that made them famous (that would be Nicks ... and, really, she still kinda kills it) or revisit the “quality sounds” of their own youth (that would be Stewart ... and those sounds are more than a half-century old). That these two have paired up for a tour is weird, since the only thing they really seem to have in common is that they’re both in their 60s, but getting to see two for-real legends for the price of one ticket makes such quibbles trivial. – Jason Ferguson
