We Say...

We have to hand it to the Downtown Arts District: October’s Dia de los Muertos-themed Third Thursday was pretty amazing. And this month’s gallery hop, while not as thematically consistent, looks to be just as good. Two standout shows among the numerous galleries setting out work for your perusal: Parker Sketch’s one-man Biography, inside CityArts Factory, and Corpus Interruptus, a group show featuring Plinio Pinto, Adrian Cherry and Nannette Cherry, tucked away at Redefine. Sketch, a mega-prolific painter about town, reaches a little deeper with this show, exploring his youth in the projects of Chicago, “his early exposure to alcohol, living on the streets, and discovering his sexual identity.” The Cherry Sisters and Pinto dive into equally personal territory but in a slightly more abstract manner, showing figurative paintings and pastels that investigate the ways “psychology and spirituality … intersect with the physical body.” Both shows will hang through the second week of December. – Jessica Bryce Young
