We Say...

It can be a little tough to get a good read on a festival of events that’s as all-over-the-map (literally and figuratively) as OLA Fest, short for the Orlando Latin American Film and Heritage Festival. This cultural mélange takes place in multiple locations around the city (City Hall, Premiere Cinema at Fashion Square Mall, Lake Eola Farmers Market), and the happenings range from film screenings to staged performances to the signing of a proclamation by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to join Mayors for Peace in its effort to abolish nuclear weapons by 2020. The full schedule is available online, but there are a couple of events that look promising: On Friday, award-winning playwright Kitty Felde will do a staged reading (directed by John DiDonna) of her play A Patch of Earth at the First United Methodist Church of Orlando; on Sunday at the Lake Eola Farmers Market downtown, Colombia Baila will present performances of Colombian traditional folk dancing and Ana Mrosek will give a presentation on Negroide poems, a collection of poems that depicts the ties between the African and Caribbean cultures. OLA Fest will also have screenings all weekend long of short films, most of which focus on Latin American topics or environmental ones, at Premiere Cinema. –Erin Sullivan (Various times through Feb. 13 at various locations; $5 per film screening, all other events free; 407-860-4919; www.olafest.org)
